5 Benefits of Deep Tissue Massage

November 27, 2023

What is Deep Tissue Massage Therapy?

Deep tissue massage is very similar to Swedish massage, but it goes much deeper, targeting the inner layers of your muscles, tendons, and fascia (which is the dense connective tissue in your body). A Deep Tissue massage treatment uses many of the same movements as a Swedish massage, but there is far more pressure involved.

This technique is best geared towards athletes, runners, and people with injuries. It can also be beneficial to people with chronic pain conditions (Fibromyalgia, Lower Back Pain, etc).

Top Benefits of the Deep Tissue Release Technique

1) Promotes Healing

Deep Tissue releases contracted areas of muscles and tissues.

This can help increase the blood flow to the soft tissues and may help to reduce inflammation.

2) Reduces Pain, including Chronic Issues

Most deep tissue massages will begin as a more traditional relaxation massage. Once your muscles are warmed up, your Massage Therapist will begin to work deep and target your problem areas. Chronic Back Pain, Stiff Neck, Shoulder Pain, Fibromyalgia, and Plantar Fasciitis can all be treated with Deep Tissue Massages.

3) Reduces Stiffness and Increases Movement

Deep tissue massage, especially regular massage can help break up scar tissue. Scar Tissue buildup is common after injuries, and can lead to pain, discomfort, and stiffness.

Stiffness can also be a result of sport injuries, which deep tissue massage targets wonderfully. This technique stretches tight muscles, helps with fatigue & soreness, and helps get the muscles back to a strong, mobile state.

4) Helps with Pregnancy

Our Registered Massage Therapists have experience treating pregnant women. Research shows how this massage technique can help reduce pain during labour. It can also help pre-labour, to increase relaxation, relieve tight muscles, and boost mental health.

5) Helps with Stress, Anxiety, and High Blood Pressure

Deep tissue massage can help reduce tension which in turn combats stress-induced high blood pressure. Taking time to unwind, take a break, and treat yourself is a great form of self-care.

This technique is also great at targeting tension headaches and stress-related pain, such as tight shoulders, digestion issues, and jaw pain.

What To Expect After Your Massage

It is always important during any massage to have open communication with your therapist about the level of pressure you wish during your treatment. This amount of pressure may be different for different areas throughout your treatment. All Registered Massage Therapists are trained to know and understand your muscles and many feel that too much pain is counterproductive to the healing process.

After a Deep Tissue Treatment, you may experience some soreness either immediately after, or in the days following your massage. It is always best to discuss this with your therapist as they will recommend follow up care for you; such as ice, heat, or even stretching.

It’s always best before your massage to discuss any of your concerns or problem areas with you Registered Massage Therapist or RMT. A treatment can be a full-body massage or focus only on one area.
